BPC Turf Field Protocol

Plastic or rubber cleats are the recommended footwear for the new turf field at BPC for children 15 years old or younger. The cleats help comb the turf and keeps the turf from becoming packed down or flattened as happens when flat soled tennis shoes are worn. Only water will be allowed out on the turf field. All other drinks and snacks will have to be passed out and consumed in the hard surfaced areas around and outside of the BPC field. Food and sugary drinks will stain and spoil the new turf so BPC is making it a policy to not allow anything but water out on the field. Please help us keep the field beautiful for years to come by respecting this protocol and the Ball Field Rules and Regulations which are a condition of our permit.

BPC Ball Field Rules and Regulations
  1. Only water is allowed on the fields. No food or beverages of any kind, except water is allowed. That means NO COFFEE either.
  2. No Smoking on the ball fields
  3. Metal Cleats are not allowed. Rubber or plastic cleats for children 15 years old or younger.
  4. No dogs or other animals are allowed on the ball fields
  5. No bicycles are allowed on the ball fields or chained to the fence inside the ball fields.
  6. Spectators must use the areas provided.

Girls' only Jamboree

The girls only soccer jamboree returned by popular demand to Friday evenings and expanded to accommodate more age groups; 2nd -3rd graders and 4th-5th graders.
Led by trained female coaches, the focus will be on both improving skills and short sided scrimmage play. This mini-series will culminate in a Mother vs Daughter game that will be the highlight of the year. Please make plans on joining us.

Special Thanks are due to our neighbors next door at Goldman Sachs for sponsoring this years Girl‘s Soccer Jamboree program. We look forward to further developing together our programs for expanding girl‘s participation in Downtown Soccer League.
DSL Rain Policy
Please check the website before leaving your home to determine if fields have been closed for practices or games. We do our best to post field closings 30 minutes prior to game time and by 3:15p on practice days. The primary fields we play on have great drainage and all weather turf. Assume that the practice and game are on unless you are notified otherwise or the field is posted as being closed.
We will be playing soccer in a light rain, like Friday night 9/23) but not if it is a constant driving rain, so please dress your player and yourselves accordingly.
DSL Plays Games on Governor's Island

2009 marked the inaugural year for DSL on Governor‘s Island. For the first time ever Minor and Major division players and their families enjoyed a couple of weekends of soccer jamborees in the bucolic setting of the New York Harbor. We hope that Governor‘s Island will successfully secure public funding for next year‘s operation so that we can further expand our time on the island‘s grass fields. Keep your eye out for further details.

Coaches Corner

Here is a list of some start of the season pointers:

  1. Maintain perspective.
  2. Become a communicator: being a good listener is as important as being a good giver of feedback.
  3. Adjust the measure of success on a player by player basis.
  4. Position players to balance play on the field and then coach to win.
  5. Reward the goal scorer with the opportunity to celebrate by standing along side the coach for a few minutes after scoring.
  6. Reward the scorer of a hat trick with the opportunity to hone up on goalie skills.
  7. Remember the criticism sandwich, it works well in helping the players digest your directions: praise, adjust, and then praise again.
  8. Keep in mind what the experience is like for the players and families on both sides of the ball.
  9. Stay focused on making the experience fun.
  10. Skill development is a crucial aspect of fun. It is more important than winning.
