About Our League
2011 marked the nineteenth season of youth soccer in Lower Manhattan for the Downtown Soccer League. The season had over 1200 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17 playing soccer on one of our 75 teams.

DSL is a recreational youth soccer league which stresses skill development, team play and good sportsmanship. We are committed to being positive role models who value honesty, integrity and fair play. We strive to provide a fun experience, on both sides of the ball for all participants, while developing a passion for youth soccer in lower Manhattan

Girls' only Jamboree
The girls only soccer jamboree returns by popular demand to Friday evenings and expands to accommodate more age groups; 2nd -3rd graders, 4th-5th graders and 6th-7th graders.

Led by trained female coaches, the younger age groups will focus on both improving skills and short sided scrimmage play while the older age groups will compete in small sided round robin games with team assignments changing week from week. This mini-series will culminate in an evening of Mother vs Daughter games that will be the highlight of the year. Please make plans on joining us.

Special Thanks are due to our neighbors next door at Goldman Sachs for sponsoring this years Girl‘s Soccer Jamboree program.
Afternoon Player Clinics at BPC ball field

DSL Plays Games on Governor's Island

2009 marked the inaugural year for DSL on Governor‘s Island. For the first time ever Minor and Major division players and their families enjoyed a couple of weekends of soccer jamborees in the bucolic setting of the New York Harbor. We hope that Governor‘s Island will successfully secure public funding for next year‘s operation so that we can further expand our time on the island‘s grass fields. Keep your eye out for further details.

Coaches Corner

Here is a list of some start of the season pointers:

  1. Maintain perspective.
  2. Become a communicator: being a good listener is as important as being a good giver of feedback.
  3. Adjust the measure of success on a player by player basis.
  4. Position players to balance play on the field and then coach to win.
  5. Reward the goal scorer with the opportunity to celebrate by standing along side the coach for a few minutes after scoring.
  6. Reward the scorer of a hat trick with the opportunity to hone up on goalie skills.
  7. Remember the criticism sandwich, it works well in helping the players digest your directions: praise, adjust, and then praise again.
  8. Keep in mind what the experience is like for the players and families on both sides of the ball.
  9. Stay focused on making the experience fun.
  10. Skill development is a crucial aspect of fun. It is more important than winning.
